FOIL INSULATION RECENTLY INSTALLED IN DOMESTIC ROOF SPACES
Recently caused death in Australia.   Please read.....

With the introduction of foil based insulation it is now highly recommended that all contractors exercise extreme caution an implement the following procedures prior to entering a ceiling space.

1. You must perform a risk assessment of the intended work before entering the ceiling space or erecting a ladder to walk on any roof material.

2. Prior to entering the ceiling space, using a PROXIMITY TESTER test all the Foil around the edge of the manhole “If it lights up then immediately call a Master Electrician”. (Do not touch the Foil with your hands or any part of your body) You may test the device is working by holding it near a power point.

3. Even if there is no voltage turn off all power to the dwelling – this must be done before you enter a ceiling space or walking onto any roofing material. (PLEASE NOTE THIS DOES NOT ISOLATE THE CONSUMERS MAINS) Retest with the proximity test again before entering.  For safety you must note the path of consumer’s mains (wires from the street connection to the main switchboard) as these need an electrician to isolate.

 4. Observe electrical wiring – while in the ceiling if you see any of the following please inform the homeowner and/or notify a Master Electrician.

•  Bare or damaged wiring

•  Exposed or damaged equipment and connections

•  Staples driven into cables

5. Should you still have concerns about electrical safety of the customer’s ceiling space, advise the customer and request they contact a Master Electrician.
This will include an appropriate electrical safety assessment.  Security Electrical Solutions offer these services so give us a call if you have reason to be concerned.
